Sam Green is an independent surf roots artist from the UK. Residing in North Devon, Sam is both a solo artist and leader of the band Sam Green and the Midnight Heist.
As a touring Artist, Sam has travelled far and wide all over The UK and Europe under his own name since 2010. After having played guitar and written music in numerous Alt Rock, Americana inspired bands since his teens; Sam took a long backpacking trip around South America and returned home in 2010 with a note book full of new songs, inspired to get out on the road and play his new music as much as possible.
“I call it surf, roots and road-trip music; because its roots music to listen to in your car on your way to the beach; and if you’re no where near the beach, then hopefully it at least gives you that laid back feeling.” This is what Sam had to say in a recent interview when asked about his music and the upcoming EP from Sam Green and the Midnight Heist, due out in 2018.
Sam and his band have had a year full of memorable moments. 2017 started off with a brand new line up featuring Paul Hopkins on Bass, Steve Tanton on Drums and Lucy Green on Guitar and Banjo. The band set off on tour in April with a brand new setlist of songs which Sam had written on his 8-track recorder in the months building up to the start of the tour. This new music was a mature departure from the band’s previous sound. Still in keeping with the old feel of a slide guitar led roots/rock band which SGATMH have built their reputation as since 2013. But now with aspects of roots reggae, hip-hop beats, alt rock, new wave and folk. Not to mention an epic new female voice in the mix. The band toured the UK through April and consolidated their new collective voice at a small festival just outside Newquay, where the band proved themselves to be a premier headline act more than capable of representing the southwest. What followed in the next few months was a festival season filled with amazing moments. The first stop, Glastonbury 2017 where the band played a series of shows to excited fans old and new. In August, the band dipped it’s toe in to the European festival circuit for the first time with tremendously well recieved sets at La Truite Magique Festival in Belgium and Sziget Festival in Budapest. Sam and his new band mates ended their first season together at On the road festival near the world famous Croyde bay, which is a stones throw from where the band are now preparing for their 2017 autumn tour and putting the finishing touches to their brand new EP which is due for release early in 2018.
Since he first set out on his own in 2010, Sam hasn’t really had a chance to look back. His percussive acoustic slide guitar style, combined with stomp box and Harmonica, have served as a foundation; on which he has built a strong reputation as a live act with universal appeal. His one-man-band shows are raw, intimate offerings of virtuosic slide guitar, percussive rhythms, engaging song writing and a soulful, blues inspired voice.
In 2013, Sam released the ‘Miles Away’ EP, the debut release from Sam Green and the Midnight Heist and began to build his relationship with the UK festival circuit playing stand out shows at The Isle of Wight festival, Secret Garden Party, Shambala and Glastonbury where The Independent Newspaper described the band as “One of the hot new acts making the summer swing”. Along with members of his band, Sam followed the release of the ‘Miles Away EP’ in 2014 with the ‘Wide Awake EP’ and in 2016 with a live recording entitled ‘Factory Studio Sessions’
Filmed and recorded in Bristol, where Sam was living at the time.
March 2017 saw the release of Sam’s first full length solo album ‘Just Stand Still’ a record which tells the story of coming home to his beloved North Devon and laying down roots on which to start a new chapter. The album features eight new songs written at home on an 8-track recorder and developed over the space of a year where Sam had the time and space to create, surf and recover from a hectic few years of non-stop D.I.Y touring. The album was finally recorded and produced at Pound House Studios near Braunton, under the guidence of producer and drummer Steve Tanton.
